Affymetrix wanted an elegant and understandable means of depicting laboratory research experiments as workflow diagrams. These diagrams were intended for publication in The Affymetrix Microarray Bulletin (http://www.microarraybulletin.com), a quarterly magazine published by Affymetrix that highlights leading microarray research and diagnostic development from around the world. The Affymetrix Microarray Bulletin staff chose the research of Dr. Timothy Triche, of Children's Hospital Los Angeles, as their first workflow. Researchers at the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine have discovered gene expression and DNA polymorphism profiles that more accurately diagnose and predict outcome in the most common malignant soft tissue tumor in children and young adults, rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS). Tami Tolpa, of Tolpa Studios, worked closely with the AMB staff, as well as the Triche laboratory researchers, to design the workflow diagram, create the custom icons, and develop the statistical figures. The Affymetrix workflow design is currently being translated into an interactive Flash tool (by an outside agency), enabling scientists around the world to create their own experiment workflows via the web. Click on the image to the left to see the workflow actual size. Its a 872K PDF file, and may take some time to load. You will need Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer. ©2006 Affymetrix, Inc. |
